Parent Workbook: Enhancing your Child's Educational and Emotional Growth!

5 years ago, in the midst of the pandemic, I met an elementary school educator who was eager to help children and parents with support for the stress families were going through at that time. We decided to put our heads together (though 5 feet apart at the time) and come up with some ideas of how to help.

We started exploring the idea of a workbook that would help educate parents on developmental milestones for learning and social-emotional health as well as provide support through coping skills for stressful times. Soon after, an opportunity for grant funding came up through the Vela Education Fund, and we quickly applied. We were fortunate to secure grant funding to write our workbook. A few years later of much hard work, our workbook is done and ready to publish!

Czarina Tran-Bernett is an educator, parent coach, and children’s book writer with over 20 years of working with children. She provides insight in the book on learning milestones for children ages 5-9, including what to expect in terms of learning, how to support your children’s learning at home and creating a plan for getting homework done.

On the mental health side, I have included topics such as addressing difficult topics at home (like death and divorce), dealing with family dynamics, coping skills for everyday stressors, how to foster and enhance your connection, or attachment to your child, as well as how to identify when it’s time to seek mental health support for your child.

We came together to share our knowledge on social-emotional development and address topics such as temperament and social challenges. Our workbook overall focuses on enhancing communication and the relationship between the parent and child. There are reflective exercises for parents to do alone as well as age-appropriate exercises for parents and children to do together.

This workbook covers children ages 5-9, so it is best for caregivers of children in this age range, but would also make a great gift for someone who is a parent-to-be, or who has younger children, to help prepare them for the next developmental stages! It would also be great for teachers, early education specialists, or mental health therapists looking to understand more about child development.
